The Yankees' biggest strength to begin the season has turned into the biggest weakness just six weeks into it. With Ivan Nova done for the year and Michael Pineda out until at least June, the Yankees will have to put another starter on the disabled list on Sunday.
Manager Joe Girardi told reporters before today's game against the Milwaukee Brewers that the results of an MRI on CC Sabathia's right knee last night came back showing inflammation/fluids and swelling, but luckily no tears; Sabathia will be placed on the 15-day DL, and Girardi hopes the 15 days will be all he needs.
In the meantime, RHP Matt Daley has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton, with Alfredo Aceves the likeliest choice to take Sabathia's spot in the rotation. Although, it should be noted that Chase Whitely was scratched from his Triple-A start today. No reason was given why, but the Yankees could call him up as the long-relief arm with Aceves moving to the rotation.
Whitely is currently not on teh 40-man roster, so the Yankees would have to make some moves to get him to New York for Monday's game against the New York Mets.
Sabathia gave up four runs (one earned) on eight hits -- three of them homeruns, including a Carlos Gomez homerun to lead-off the 1st inning -- in 5.1 innings last night. He has had some good moments this season, but most of them have been bad, due to inconsistency.
A lot of Yankees fans want him and his 5.28 ERA to be kicked out of the rotation, and they'll be getting that for the next two weeks, at least.
