Today Charleston Riverdog game played a crazy game of baseball versus Hickory. The game featured several big innings, and a rare bad start by Luis Severino. But the biggest news of the game was that Mike Ford hit four homeruns. He hit a 2-run homer in the fourth; a solo homer in the 6th, 7th and 9th innings. His great game doubled his homer total, and adds to a really great season.
Ford has a .836 OPS coming into today’s game, and obviously that just went up quite a bit. He might have been an undrafted free agent from an Ivy League college, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a prospect.
The Yankees weren’t the only team that wanted him, as he had offers from the New York Mets, the Houston Astros, the Seattle Mariners, and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees ended up signing him for $140,000, so they actually went over-slot for him. Despite being undrafted he could’ve gone back to school as he wasn’t a senior, he is actually about the same age as Aaron Judge. These facts show that he wasn’t the typical undrafted free agent. He has some talent.
Unfortunately, he might have to stay at this level all season, or at least for a while, because the team has no room for a 1B/DH type. They already have Bird, Bichette, Snyder, and Jags all playing significant time. It’s possible that one of them gets pushed quickly— seems likely with the way they are playing—but that decision won’t be made for a while.
